This was actually a very difficult shot to get. I wanted a very clear, crisp picture of the horse, and thus challenged myself to stick to a low ISO (OK, I stubbornly refused to go higher). It was late in the day and the lighting was sharp – extreme differences in shadow and light. The horse, also curious about me, was also uncertain of whether I represented friend or foe. Add to that he was full of energy and he insisted on prancing around the yard in unpredictable directions. Constantly moving from deep shadow to light, it was hard to get a good exposure. Not to mention that it’s asking a lot of a horse to stay still enough for a 1/50th exposure setting to not produce blurs. But after some time and a LOT of shots, I finally got the shot I was looking for. It came out of the camera a little work, but a minimum of post production work fixed that.
