About an hour into the trail at Effigy Mounds, about 8:30 AM, there’s a field of wild grasses ringed by dense trees which are particularly beautiful at this time of year and at that time of day. But in the foreground a lonely young tree stood, bare already, as if both envious and proud of his distant neighbors, and perhaps a bit lonely.
