The next in my series of what I do with photos to make the monotonous more visually interesting. I thought the bladeless windmill offered a kind of despairing image and used that as the inspiration for my edits.
I started by darkening the whole thing with a horizontal gradient from top to bottom which I feel added more drama to the image of the windmill against the sky, and increased the sense of isolation. I did little to brighten the highlights, but I did deepen the darks and shadows, which also served to bring out the lines in the field better. Also helping with that was to drop down the orange, yellow, green and aqua in the black and white mix, and goose up the blue and purple a bit.
I added more sharpening than I normally do to this image and masked about half as much as usual, which helped to add a texture to the image (particularly after adding a healthy amount of grain). Again, I was looking for a vintage, dust-bowl kind of feel to the image. I added a vignette of -13, which made the brightest part of the picture an area just to the left of the windmill, which I think works well to highlight the intensity of the image.
When I go to Hell, I expect it will be to find myself with a great camera and lens, fantastic scenery, and power lines in front of everything. I hate power lines with a passion. But in this case I can live with them. I think the two solitary lines actually add the sense of loneliness of the scene, but I did feel it was important to crop out the foremost pole. It was too distracting from the main subject.
