f/2, 1/25, ISO-1600, 50mm

Yeah yeah…so I keep posting pictures of myself.

It’s not really that I’m hung up on myself. It’s just that it’s incredibly hard for me to find models whose schedule fits mine. So if I want to practice portraiture, I pretty much have to practice by myself. My wife is often kind enough to stand in to help me get focus, but that’s about it.

I would love to get feedback from real portrait photographers on this though, even though I know there’s a lot that’s wrong with it. Shadows are harsh and focus is poor. What can I say? I have no lighting equipment at all. This was lit with bare ceiling bulbs and a florescent trouble light.  I put blue tissue paper over the ceiling bulbs and brown tissue paper over the trouble light. This reduced the harshness of the overall image considerably and did about as much as I know how to do with what I have to soften the shadows.

But of course that also reduced the available light and forced me to stop down to no depth of field again (I keep coming up against that), and slow the shutter speed to the point where at least a portion of the fuzziness is undoubtedly attributable to movement.

Gels would be better for color (though might not lessen the intensity much) but I haven’t had the time to go get some. I really should make it a point though if I want to fool around to any extent with interiors and lighting, even if I only have trouble lights.

Also, anyone have tips on something I can use for cheap tripods for my light units?

I love your enthusiasm! So cool. It shows in your photo, too. All the technical stuff is important to a degree, but I love trying capture an energy, a human spirit. I think you did a great job.

Thank you Liz. I try to keep my interest up by trying new and different things. It’s fun some days and not so much others, just like everything I suppose. But photography has a much higher fun ration that most other stuff! 🙂
