Respect The Property

f/5, 1/1250, ISO-100, 170mm

The last posts of my experiments with my 75-300mm zoom. Although I didn’t know it at the time, I was also playing with depth of field (this was before my dedicated trip to play with that). It’s unfortunate that this lens doesn’t record the subject distance in the picture file as some of my other lenses do. Partly I rely on that information to help me learn how pronounced DOF will be at certain ranges with certain settings. I’m guessing that, zoomed in at 170 mm here, I was perhaps 30-40 feet from the post. At the angle I was shooting there must have been at least 4 feet of depth from the left side of the fence to the right side, but it is all well within the exposure’s DOF. The background twig that is out of the depth of field though is significantly out , but I don’t think it could have been much beyond 15 feet away from the post.

In the end, I achieved the effect that I wanted to by blurring the background while keeping the foreground in sharp focus, but it was more a matter of luck than planning.

There is an andriod app that calculates DOF based on different cameras, focal lengths, F values, and distance from the subject. Might be worth a try….

Yeah I got that one a couple of weeks ago. I used it to figure out how to get the image I wanted for Pod, posted one or two before this one. It was an immediate benefit.
