Evening Portrait

f/5.6, 1/200, ISO-100, 50mm, Flash, shoot-through umbrella

I’m getting to the point where I really like portraits done in the late or early hours of the day. There’s a drama to this shot that I think is very eye-catching without, I hope, distracting too much from the subject. It might have been a little improved if I’d had his head turned a little more to his right so that side of his face was less in shadow. But I think I’m picking nits, there.

    Did you use a softbox?

I like the lighting. What kind of lighting did you use?

Thanks Cardinal and Maralee! I don’t have quite the wealth yet for even a small softbox. I did this with a $13 shoot through umbrella. I’ve done just enough with it now to really see the wonderful things it’s capable of, and also to experience the serious limitations it has to really make me want to splurge on the softbox.
