A constant challenge for me at the Grand Canyon was try to represent the sheer scale of what I was looking at in a photograph. It wasn’t really possible, of course. I never really fully comprehended the scale with my naked eye. This photo is one of my best attempts, yet still falls incredibly short. The background behind that crowd looks impressive, but it’s important to remember that it is miles and miles away. the river you can catch a glimpse of in the lower right isn’t yards wide – it’s several miles wide.
